Before attending our events you need to make sure you have become a member of our society on the student union webpage. You only need to register  once to gain access to our events. Some events such as bar crawl require you to buy a ticket in addition to registering.

The first Physoc event back in person! We will be hosting an astronomy night on campus for our new freshers! Due to Covid restrictions, we are allowed a maximum of 30 people so make sure you let us know you're coming! You also need to have a free Physoc membership (press register below to get yours).

Join us for an evening looking at the stars with your new coursemates! Find us by the observatory behind the library. Meet us by Simply Fresh at 19:20 for help finding the observatory.

PHYSOC BALL- STARRY NIGHT

We are returning to the cathedral for the annual Physoc ball and this year the theme is Starry Night. Ticket includes 3 course meal, half a bottle of wine and photographer. We look forward to seeing our members dressed up in black tie for a fabulous evening!

JIM AL-KHALILI CUP

It is time for the annual physics football tournament to play for the prestigious Jim Al-Khlaili Cup! Rules are simple: 6 aside, all teams must have a girl playing at all times, unlimited substitutions. If we're lucky the Physics Department Academics might put a team out -i t's an event not to miss! 

Refreshments and snacks provided by the department.

PHYSOC GO SAILING

Surrey's Sailing Club has very kindly offered to give 12 lucky Physoc members a 2 hour sailing lesson in return for a £5 contribution to charity. 

All equipment will be provided (but if you have any of your own wet-suits etc please bring them). There will also be students present who are fully qualified sailing instructors and fully qualified powerboat rescue crew (just incase someone gets a bit more wet than they planned!)

All levels can be catered for but we are expecting lots of beginners so please come along even if you have zero experience as it is a great opportunity to try out the sport!

This will be followed by a short discussion and disability awareness in STEM.

The Physoc committe have been working hard to produce videos for a local school to help to continue the engagement of their pupils in science. 

We have decided to extend this opportunity to our members. We would like any of you to make a short video about any topic or experiment in science. Aimed at KS3/KS4, and we'd esspecially love it if it was interactive. 

This would count as voluntary work and look great on your CV.

Its that time of year again, the weather is warming up, it is bearable to walk around Guildford at night in just a T-shirt without freezing. Its Bar Crawl season!

Our first bar crawl of semester 2 is the annual TriSci Bar Crawl with chemistry and biology. Help us show the world that the sciences do know how to sesh! 

Tickets will be available to buy 2 weeks before the event. 

ION BEAM CENTRE TOUR

The Ion Beam Centre on campus are giving Physoc members an exclusive oportunity to tour their facilities. This includes seeing the world famous particle accelerators and learning about the fascinating research they are used for. 

This will be followed by a talk about IOP opportunities where pizza and alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks will be provided. 

 

Meet us by the IFH foyer at 4:45pm if you are unsure of the location of the Ion Beam Centre. Otherwise see you at the Centre for a 5pm start. 

JIM AL-KHALILI TALK

Our favourite TV presenter and Surrey's very own Jim Al-Khalili is giving Physoc an exclusive free talk in AP1 about his brand new book The World According to Physics, followed by time for questions

Pop along before 1pm for some refreshments provided by the Physics Department.

Join us for our second installment of our physicist visibility movie saga. To celebrate LGBT+ history month we have chosen to watch The Imitation Game, a film about one of the most important mathematicians of the 20th century - Alan Turing. He was also a gay man, championed for LGBT rights and was one of the university's very own students.

This will be followed by a short discussion about the film and the LGBT+ community in STEM.

We will be watching the film in the Physics Common Room. Soft drinks will be provided but bring your own snacks!

FEPS TAKEOVER

All of the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences departments have joined together to put on a massive club-night/party to celebrate the end of Semester 1 exams.

We are going for a Christmas Meal at Thaikun in Guildford. They offer a good selection of food including veggie, vegan and halal options.

If you wish to come please pay £10 deposit and send us an email with your meal choices.

For the first instalment of our physicist visibility movie saga, we will be watching Hidden Figures which shows the struggle of black female mathematicians and scientists working for NASA during the space race.

The film will be followed by a short discussion about the film and black females in STEM.

We will be watching the film in the Physics Common Room. Snacks and soft drinks will be provided.

PHYSOC vs MECHSOC BAR CRAWL

Have you always wanted to prove that physics is better than engineering? but never had the opportunity? Its finally time to set the record straight as both societies go head to head in a challenge bar crawl. Compete for Physoc to earn bragging rights until the end of the year.

Most of the challenges will take place in Harri's between 18:30-20:30. No one will be pressured into drinking and any of the challenges can be refused with no consequences. The aim is to have fun! 

Tickets include T-shirt, Rubix entry and drinks deals.

You can pick your T-shirt between 12:00-16:00 on the 26th and between 9:00 - 12:30 on the 27th. Or grab it in Harri's once we've started.
